1981 CJ7 Restoration - 2020.05.11

Today I'm attaching the transmission and transfer case to each other. When I took them apart, I remember it taking some effort and a little time with a rubber mallet to get them separated. Putting them back together took a lot less effort. I used my shop crane to suspend the transmission while aligning it with the transfer case, which worked well.

Getting things lined up.

Things came together rather nicely and got the bolts torqued to 35 lb-ft, per the service manual. Or was it 30 lb-ft? Can't remember.

Transmission and transfer case finally back together again.

One thing that caught my attention was that there is a bolt that goes through the housing where the end of the shift lever attaches to the transmission. When I took the transmission and transfer case apart, there was no bolt here - my guess is that when the transmission was rebuilt, they never put this bolt back since it is so inconveniently located.

Top view - note bolt inside of housing.
