1981 CJ7 Restoration - 2018.09.08
Short day on the Jeep, but dropped the driveshafts and got the transmission and transfer case out. Word on the street is that the SR4 manual 4-speed gearbox is mediocre at best and is a light-duty transmission. I figure since it's lasted this long and has been rebuilt in the last 4,000 miles, I'm probably good here for a while, and I don't want to take on the task of trying to mate a new transmission to the existing setup.
On the other end of the spectrum, the Dana 300 transfer case has an excellent reputation for being a robust and reliable transfer case. For heavy wheelers, the output shaft is a known weak point that is often replaced with a heavy duty upgrade, but again, not inclined to take on that additional cost and setup at this time.
